Honoring Autumn

Fall Reflections by Kim Stokely

Tomorrow’s Autumn equinox marks the shifting of the seasons.  In the northern hemisphere it is a time of shortening days, and, in areas that have distinct seasons, the trees begin a show of riotous color. In the Healing Circle practice, Autumn symbolizes a time of surrender, of letting go, of moving through life like water flows.  It represents stillness, silence, and peace and the immensity of power emerging out of true peace.  It represents tranquility and companionship. It also represents endings and dieing.  Autumn symbolizes the mid-life years in the human journey.  It is a time when greater intuition is possible.  It signals a time to reflect on our lives and assess our health and well-being, including our choices and priorities regarding relationships, how we take care of ourselves, how we spend our time, and what our intentions are.  It is also a time to be grateful for the many blessings in our life, and to be generous of spirit.  In this, healing can take place.

Ancient Ways Botanicals offers a variety of products that are made specially for the Autumn season.  I will be blogging about these products for our Healing Circles Community.  You can follow along and learn about these products and how they can support your exploration of true self by ordering our Autumn Seasonal Sampler, which provides a small sample of many of the Autumn products.

Ancient Ways Healing Circles offers simple practices and a supportive environment that nurtures us on our journey toward connection, wholeness, and healing.Through our blog and newsletter, we will send you regular communications about simple practices that will help us on this journey, while cultivating your understanding of the use of essential oils and aromatherapy.  As we move through the Autumn, we will offer you a variety of practices that will support your exploration of yourself in relation to the season. Explorations will all be supported by specific essential oils that connect us to the wisdom, nourishment, and healing of the plant world. The simple act of using botanicals helps us pay attention to our life practices, our health, and our relationships. The transformational power of botanicals through their essences, oils, and other properties can help support the journey to our inner wisdom and wholeness. In our Healing Circle, we will listen to our inner teacher, the voices in our healing circle, and the healing power of the plants that have been used for centuries to help open awareness, evoke the sacred, bring joy, heal the body and uplift the spirit.

Now, I invite you to take the opportunity to perform an aromatic ceremony to honor Autumn.  I adapted this idea from the book, Daily Aromatherapy: Transforming the seasons of your life with essential oils, by Joni Keim and Ruah Bull (See description and link below).

Make a blend to honor autumn.  In a small glass container mix together:

1 drop Fir for self-understanding

1 drop Roman chamomile for forgiveness

7 drops Lavender for healing on all levels

1 drop jasmine for gratitude

2 drops Rose for compassion and unconditional love.

Gather five objects that represent the Autumn harvest for you.  These could be a variety  of squashes, colorful gourds, stalks of corn, dried leaves, acorns, or other seeds.  Choose a place in or around your home where you can create an “Autumnal arrangement” to enjoy for the season.  Now, sit or stand comfortably in front of the place where you will be arranging your autumnal objects.  Place a few drops of your Autumnal blend on a tissue and inhale the aroma through your nose.  Pause and inhale again.  Choose one object.  As you place it in the arrangement, say out loud or internally, “May all beings enjoy the fruits of self-understanding.”  Now choose a second object, and place it with intention, saying, “May all beings enjoy the fruits of forgiveness.”  With the third, say, “May all beings enjoy harvesting the fruits of healing.”  For the fourth, say, “May all beings enjoy harvesting the fruits of gratitude.”  and lastly, for the fifth, say, “May all beings enjoy harvesting the fruits of compassion and unconditional love.” Inhale your blend again and allow yourself to embody and  radiate the gifts of the Autumnal season.  Whenever you look at this arrangement, repeat these blessings for all beings.  If at any  time you want to add something to your arrangement, do so knowing that you are continuing to send blessings of the season out to the world.

I invite you to send your stories and experiences with the season and this ceremony.

Enjoy!  Kim
