Brief Summary: Helichrysum’s powerful medicinal and psychological properties and broad range of use have made it one of the most widely used essential oils in recent years. In addition to its valued remedial application for many common ailments, research indicates its application in vascular and neural regeneration.

Plant Description: Native to the Mediterranean region; cultivated in Corsica, Croatia, Italy, Albania, former Yugoslavia, southern France, and Spain. Helichrysum italicum is a strongly-scented tender perennial that thrives in hot, arid conditions and grows to a height of 24 inches in dry sandy or rocky soil (such as dry river beds and coastlines in the wild). The flowering tops are harvested when the blossoms begin to open; distillation is carried out within 24 hours of harvesting to avoid degradation of the plant material.

Oil Description: Pale yellow to deep yellow (varies with origin) oily liquid that may have a reddish tint, with a powerful, penetrating, and rich curry-like pungency, a deep, warm, honey-like aroma and an intensely sweet, fruity, tea-like undertone.

Historical/Traditional Uses: Helichrysum is relatively new as to its use in the form of an essential oil; it was first distilled in 1908 in Dalmatia, an area in the southern part of Croatia. It was traditionally used as an herb to make decoctions or infusions to address respiratory and liver ailments, allergies, and headaches.

Applications (Uses and Indications): In aromatherapy, Helichrysum is indicated for chronic skin and pulmonary ailments, spleen and liver congestion, candida, rheumatoid arthritis, muscular aches and pains, depression, nervous exhaustion, stress-related conditions, It is useful for balancing gall bladder and pancreatic function, regulating blood pressure, prevention of bruises, reducing scars, relief of migraine headaches, prevention of sunburn, and promoting lucid dreaming. Helichrysum has the ability to relax the solar plexus area where emotional blockages are deeply embedded and manifest as negative emotions, thus the release of tension and even the most stuck of emotional knots allows restoration of the emotional body. In perfumery, Helichrysum essential oil is considered a middle to base note of outstanding tenacity that blends well with angelica, balsam of Peru, bergamot and other citrus oils, chamomile, cistus, clary sage, clove, cypress, geranium, frankincense, juniper, lavender, mimosa, neroli, oakmoss, orris, petitgrain, rose, rosewood, sandalwood, vetiver, and yarrow.
