Our spikenard green essential oil is a beautiful emerald green to brownish-green mobile oil with a complex bittersweet, earthy-green, dry-woody somewhat medicinal aroma and faint musky, mushroom, and leather-like backnotes. It has been used in sacred ceremonies and as a medicinal herb for millenia. Our green spikenard has a less earthy aroma than the brown spikenard.

Botanical Name: Nardostachys grandiflora
Origin: Nepal
Part Used: Rhizomes
Process: Steam Distillation
Spikenard is a peculiar and enigmatic essential oil with connections to one of the world’s most notable holy beings. Coming to us from the highest mountains in the world, its energetic influence is in beautiful balance, both grounding and elevating.
Plant Description: Native to upper elevations (11,000-17,000 feet) of the Himalayas; grows wild in northern India and the Himalayas of China, possibly as well in Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim, Japan and Taiwan. Nardostachys chinensis is a perennial herb that has an underground shoot, or rhizome, where most of the plant’s essential oil is found. The roots are dried and minced into very small pieces for extraction of the essential oil by steam distillation.
Oil Description: Spikenard green is a beautiful emerald green to brownish yellow mobile oil with a complex heavy, bittersweet, earthy, dry-woody somewhat medicinal aroma and faint musky, mushroom, and leather-like backnotes.
Historical/Traditional Uses: It is well known that Mary of Bethany (later considered to be Mary Magdalene) anointed the feet of Jesus with spikenard ointment, perhaps aware of its ability to have a deeply calming effect on the psyche.
Applications (Uses and Indications): In aromatherapy, Spikenard is renowned for its rejuvenating effect on mature skin. It is indicated for skin rashes, fungal infections, athlete’s foot, allergies, inflammation, nervous (upset) stomach, flatulence, digestive complaints, anemia, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, stress and tension. In India, it is used to repel insects and is highly regarded for scenting the hair; since its first use many centuries ago, it has been particularly noted for its ability to instill a profound sense of peace. In perfumery, Spikenard, considered a base note, is an excellent fixative that blends well with cardamom and other spice oils, cedarwood, labdanum, lavender, lemon, lime, oakmoss, orange, patchouli, pine needle, and vetiver.
Contraindications (Safety and Precautions): Spikenard essential oil is non-toxic, non-sensitizing and non-irritating.
Standard Safety Precautions: Always dilute essential oils before using. Keep essential oils out of the eyes and mucous membranes; in case of contact, DO NOT use water, instead place a drop or two of vegetable oil on a tissue to gently wipe out of eye or off area of contact. In severe cases, seek professional help immediately. Keep out of the reach of children. In case of ingestion, call 911 immediately.
